Chipotle Salsa Sodium Comparison: Red, Green, Tomato & Corn

Compare the sodium and calories of Chipotle’s red, green, corn and fresh tomato salsas using published portions.

Chipotle's salsas create a useful case study in reading two nutrients together. Some add almost no calories, yet meaningfully change the sodium in a full bowl. The printed serving sizes also differ: the tomato and corn salsas use 4 oz, while the red and green tomatillo salsas use 2 fl oz.

Published salsa values

IngredientServingCaloriesProteinCarbsSodium
Fresh tomato salsa4 oz250 g4 g550 mg
Roasted chili-corn salsa4 oz803 g16 g330 mg
Tomatillo-green chili salsa2 fl oz150 g4 g260 mg
Tomatillo-red chili salsa2 fl oz300 g4 g500 mg

At their printed serving sizes, fresh tomato salsa provides 550 mg sodium and 25 calories; red tomatillo salsa provides 500 mg and 30 calories; corn salsa provides 330 mg and 80 calories; green tomatillo salsa provides 260 mg and 15 calories. The sodium numbers rank a standard order's contribution, not how salty each food is per gram.

A 540-calorie starting bowl

The chicken, brown rice, black beans and fajita vegetable bowl totals 540 calories and 860 mg sodium. Add fresh tomato salsa and those values become 565 calories and 1,410 mg. Add green tomatillo salsa instead and you have 555 calories and 1,120 mg. In both cases calories barely change compared with sodium.

What about the corn salsa?

The corn salsa adds 80 calories, 16 g carbohydrates and 330 mg sodium. Its nutrition looks different because it contains an appreciable carbohydrate component compared with the other salsa entries. No single salsa is “best” for everybody; the decision is about flavor as well as the whole meal.

Can you ask for less salsa?

You can ask about customization at a participating restaurant, but half-serving predictions can be unreliable without knowing how the restaurant measures toppings. This calculator currently models full printed portions, not a visually estimated spoonful. Check the actual ingredients if allergies or special diet needs matter.
