Black beans and pinto beans are often treated as interchangeable in calorie estimates. In Chipotle's published nutrition facts, they are genuinely close—but not identical. Both use a 4 oz portion, which makes a one-to-one comparison meaningful.
Side-by-side nutrient values
| Ingredient | Serving | Calories | Protein | Carbs | Sodium |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Black beans | 4 oz | 130 | 8 g | 22 g | 210 mg |
| Pinto beans | 4 oz | 130 | 8 g | 21 g | 210 mg |
Both list 130 calories, 8 g protein and 210 mg sodium. Black beans show 22 g carbohydrate and 7 g fiber; pinto beans show 21 g carbohydrate and 8 g fiber. Those are small differences. Neither choice alone turns a high-calorie bowl into a low-calorie bowl.
What would swapping beans change in a chicken bowl?
Consider chicken, brown rice and fajita vegetables. Adding either black or pinto beans creates a 540-calorie combination with 45 g protein and 860 mg sodium using the printed portions. The difference is mainly one gram of carbohydrate and one gram of fiber in this source edition.
That makes this a good example of why calculators should avoid invented precision. If another site tells you one type of bean will significantly change the protein in an otherwise identical order, compare its claim to the actual serving values. Ingredient substitutions should be evaluated for the nutrient difference they really produce.
What about a vegetarian bowl?
Beans can supply a substantial fraction of a meat-free bowl's protein, but they also add carbohydrates. Pairing beans with sofritas, vegetables and a choice of salsa produces a different profile from meat-based bowls. If you are trying to meet a particular protein goal, inspect the whole meal, not one bean serving. Our vegetarian Chipotle guide shows worked examples.
Which should you choose?
For calories, protein and sodium the printed values are ties. Choose on flavor and texture, then adjust larger contributors such as rice, guacamole, tortilla or the protein portion. If you prefer to optimize around the meal's total sodium, examine the sauces rather than assuming the bean swap makes a meaningful difference.
