Start with the published portions
Using Chipotle's published US paper nutrition guide, a brown rice bowl with black beans, chicken and fajita vegetables totals 540 calories, 45 g protein and 860 mg sodium. That is an arithmetic sum of four stated serving sizes—not an officially named menu entrée. The protein mainly comes from the chicken (32 g) and beans (8 g).
Why toppings can change the trade-off
According to the same guide, a 4 oz portion of fresh tomato salsa adds just 25 calories but adds 550 mg sodium. Tomatillo-green salsa adds 15 calories and 260 mg sodium per 2 fl oz. Adding the former to the example bowl would give 565 calories and 1,410 mg sodium; adding the latter would give 555 calories and 1,120 mg sodium. The choice is about more than calories.
What about double chicken?
A second standard 4 oz chicken portion adds another 180 calories, 32 g protein and 310 mg sodium. The original brown-rice bowl would increase from 540 to 720 calories, so it would no longer fit a 600-calorie ceiling. This is why our optimizer uses your specific limits instead of labeling every double-protein order as best.
Try your own combination
You can remove rice, swap beans, choose steak or sofritas, or compare the protein density of other combinations. The live builder and goal finder can filter against your chosen limits. Not every theoretically valid combination is guaranteed to be offered at every location.
