If your main objective is to compare Chipotle protein choices, the fairest quick starting point is to use the restaurant's published servings. The regular entrées in our source table use 4 oz for chicken, steak, barbacoa, carnitas and sofritas, which makes the numbers easier to inspect than comparing arbitrary bowl combinations.
Published protein ingredient figures
| Ingredient | Serving | Calories | Protein | Carbs | Sodium |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chicken | 4 oz | 180 | 32 g | 0 g | 310 mg |
| Steak | 4 oz | 150 | 21 g | 1 g | 330 mg |
| Barbacoa | 4 oz | 170 | 24 g | 2 g | 530 mg |
| Carnitas | 4 oz | 210 | 23 g | 0 g | 450 mg |
| Sofritas | 4 oz | 150 | 8 g | 9 g | 560 mg |
Chicken lists 32 g protein for 180 calories, while steak lists 21 g for 150 calories. Barbacoa lists 24 g for 170 calories and carnitas lists 23 g for 210. Sofritas provides 8 g for 150. This is a comparison of the specific published restaurant recipes, not a claim about all cuts of chicken or beef.
Protein per 100 calories: a different way to rank
Dividing protein grams by calories and multiplying by 100 gives a descriptive ratio. Based on those entries, chicken offers approximately 17.8 g protein per 100 calories, steak 14.0, barbacoa 14.1, carnitas 11.0 and sofritas 5.3. It is a convenience calculation, not a universal dietary-quality score. It excludes questions like overall diet, micronutrients, preference, allergens and how a food is prepared.
What happens after you add the rest of a bowl?
A standard chicken portion alone is 180 calories; chicken with brown rice, black beans and fajita veggies totals 540. Double chicken changes it to 720. Adding the 320-calorie burrito tortilla instead of choosing a bowl creates another material difference. In other words, the choice of “best protein” cannot determine whether the complete order fits your calorie limit.
Sodium can reverse the practical choice
Chipotle lists sofritas at 560 mg sodium and barbacoa at 530, compared with 310 for chicken. Add sauces and the difference becomes larger or smaller depending on the combination. If you care about sodium as well as protein, compare the meal rather than relying on the protein-density ranking.
Test a real order
Build two versions with the same rice, beans and toppings, changing only the protein. That controls the comparison better than comparing two entirely different default meals. Our Chipotle calculator and double-chicken guide offer examples.
